Revisiting: "King Gucci" by Gucci Mane

In May 2015, trap legend Gucci Mane dropped a surprise 10-track mixtape, King Gucci. The project would turn out to be one of Guwop's last solo releases from behind bars, as he was serving a three-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Although it was positively received upon release, King Gucci is now lost in the stream of projects from Wop, despite features from the Migos, Fetty Wap, and more. But how does this tape hold up today? That is what I am finding out.

1. King Gucci

This is a banger right here. The Tarentino production is dope, and Gucci's flow on here in crazy. The hook is also pretty catchy. Other than that, the additions from DJ Scream and DJ Drama give a little touch-up to the track. This feels like a mixtape track, yet mastered better. I give this track a 7.5/10.

2. Still Selling Dope (ft. Fetty Wap)

Metro Boomin production? A Fetty Wap feature? This is heat. Gucci's hook is smooth, but Fetty also delivers the energy needed to make this a successful team-up. And that Metro instrumental? Godly. I can see why this is the biggest track on the tape. I give this track a 7.5/10.

3. Real Dope Boy (ft. Peewee Longway and Young Scooter)

Longway and Scooter are a good duo. I haven't heard any music from them together, but I hope there are more tracks with the two of them out there. Tarentino comes in again with some classic trap production, and Gucci comes in at the end of the song. He doesn't have the best verse, but he gives one last burst of energy before it ends. I give this track a high 7/10.

4. Got Her Drunk

Gucci employs the auto-tune again for another somewhat love song. It's not as good as tracks such as "Hell Yes" and "Thirsty," but it'll do. It sounds a bit weird, since Guwop is known for brash trap music, but I don't mind. Wop can actually pull off a sound like this. I give this track a 7/10.

5. Ice Cream (ft. Migos)

The Quavo hook sounds a bit off, but other than that, this is a pretty good track. The back-and-forth between Takeoff and Quavo on the first verse is dope, and Gucci delivers a standard verse, which means it's fire. Zaytoven's production also fits these artists well, and although I would've liked a verse from Offset, I'm giving this track a 7.5/10.

6. Put Some Wood in Her

The hook does get a little repetitive, but Gucci goes off on this track. His two verses are filled with his signature swagger, and although the FKi production is something I didn't expect, the beat-making duo delivers a futuristic-sounding beat that suits Guwop perfectly. I give this track a solid 7/10.

7. Smart Mouth

Whoever mixed this track needs to be fired. That's what I'm gonna say. But that's my only complaint. Gucci's hook is catchy, and he delivers some memorable lines during his two verses. There's not much to dislike about this song at all. I give this track a solid 7/10.

8. Saran Wrap (ft. Quavo)

Guwop has a good verse, but Quavo steals the show with a memorable hook, and he completely delivers on his end. Phenom Da Don also delivers a dope instrumental, although I don't think I've ever heard a beat from him before. I'm happy with how good this mixtape is. I give this track a high 7.5/10.

9. I Hate H*** (ft. Lil Flash)

Wow, Gucci slaughtered his verse. This feels like the old Gucci, which I guess it is, since this mixtape is filled with stuff from the vault. However, that isn't to say that Lil Flash didn't go hard. I know he's part of Chief Keef's Glo Gang, but I hadn't heard any music from him prior to this track. I might have to check out more. I give this track a 7.5/10.

10. I'm Too Much (ft. Riff Raff)

This is the outro? I didn't expect the last track on the mixtape to go so hard. The TM88 production is deadly, and Gucci does not disappoint. Riff Raff also has a dope verse, and the two of them work well together on here. I give this track a solid 8/10, which is pretty good for the closer to this project.

FINAL RATING: 7.3/10

SUMMARY:

Short but sweet, King Gucci is a hidden gem in Gucci Mane's discography. It may be forgotten by most (and I don't blame them), but this is a nice little mixtape with dope guest appearances and production well-suited to Guwop. It's nowhere near the level of mixtape classics such as Trap House III, Droptopwop, or Writing on the Wall, but for what it is, King Gucci is substantial enough.
