Album Review: "Pray for Haiti" by Mach-Hommy

Recently, Griselda Records rapper Mach-Hommy released a studio album, Pray for Haiti. I'll be completely honest with you, I had never heard of Mach-Hommy before this album came out. People started talking about it, and I decided to see what all the buzz was about. Is this a win from Griselda, or it is an absolute misfire that may have us praying for our ears instead of Haiti? Let's find out.

1. The 26th Letter

I definitely appreciate Mach-Hommy's lyricism on the track. However, it is undermined by a boring flow and a god-awful beat that sounds like someone stuck a harmonica up their ass and started farting. I'll give this track a 6/10, still, because Mach-Hommy does have some bars.

2. No Blood No Sweat

We have a much better beat this time, and Mach-Hommy has a pretty good flow on this track. He still sounds kind of tired, which doesn't help at all, but I'm giving this track a 7/10, because it is an improvement.

3. Folie A Deux (ft. Westside Gunn and Keisha Plum)

I think this track is okay enough, even if it's not catchy. Westside Gunn and Mach-Hommy both have good verses. But I really hope they actually bring memorable tracks to the table, because lyricism doesn't matter when nobody can remember the tracks. I'm giving this a 6.5/10.

4. Makrel Jaxon

I'm really enjoying the production choices on this album, but yet again we have another boring track with no memory value whatsoever. Mach-Hommy has REALLY good lyrics and and a good flow, but the track is just boring overall. I'm giving it a 5.5/10.

5. The Stellar Ray Theory

This track actually is a bit more memorable that the previous tracks. I enjoyed Mach-Hommy's flow, and the instrumental is nice. It seems that maybe this album is picking up steam as it goes on. I'm giving this track a 7/10.

6. Marie

Mach-Hommy sounds kinda lazy on this track, but parts of the track are catchy. The production is pretty good, as usual. This is a somewhat memorable track, which must mean that the album is actually going somewhere. I'm giving this song a 6.5/10.

7. Leta Yo (Skit)

I'm guessing this is a skit of kids from Haiti. It might be necessary for this album, although it's just a bunch of nonsense going on for thirty seconds. I'll give this skit a solid 6/10, because it actually fits in with the album.

8. Kriminel

The beat on this track is pretty decent, but I'm really not a fan of Mach-Hommy's flow on this track. It's boring, lazy and forgettable overall. This song was disappointing after the last two tracks before this, so I'm giving this a 5/10.

9. Pen Rale

This beat is GODLY, and Mach-Hommy compliments it pretty well. This is a shorter track, and shorter tracks usually work wonders on underwhelming and over-stuffed albums. I'm giving this track an 8/10, and that's high for an album like this.

10. Murder Czn (ft. Westside Gunn)

That "It's murder season again" is really annoying. Plus, it doesn't help that Mach-Hommy and Westside Gunn deliver half-assed verses. They both throw a good instrumental to waste, which is really a shame. I absolutely can't stand this track, and if you're gonna repeat the same goddamn thing over and over, at least have a bit of flow. I'm giving this track a low 3/10.

11. Magnum Band (ft. Tha God Fahim)

Both Mach-Hommy and Tha God Fahim had pretty good flows on this track, and the beat is pretty fire. However, Mach-Hommy did get a bit lazy at times, which is one of his main pratfalls when it comes to his music. I give this track a 6.5/10.

12. Rami (ft. Westside Gunn)

Both Westside Gunn and Mach-Hommy had really nice bars on here, although Gunn outperformed Mach by a MILE. This beat is a bit more bland this time, since it sounds like most of the other tracks on the album. The production choices starting to get a bit boring at this point, so I'm giving this track a 6.5/10.

13. Kreyol (Skit)

This was a decent but unnecessary skit, in my opinion. It talked about Kreyol, a Haitian language, but I don't hear Mach-Hommy speaking that way in this album. It still ties into the album, so this skit gets a 6/10.

14. Au Revoir (ft. Melanie Charles)

I appreciate Mach-Hommy's funny chorus on this track, but his verse is pretty forgettable, although there are a few memorable lines. This Melanie Charles person also hurts my ears, but maybe she sounds better on other tracks. I'm giving this track a 5.5/10.

15. Blockchain

This is a shorter track, but surprisingly, it is really not that good. The instrumental is okay, but Mach-Hommy sounds like he just woke up from a really long nap. Maybe he should've gulped down a 5-hour Energy before recording this album. I'm giving this track a 5/10.

16. Ten Boxes - Sin Eater

This album closes out with a pretty decent track. Mach-Hommy's flow is good, although he still sounds lazy, and this instrumental is amazing. I really don't have that much else to say, so I'm giving this track a 6/10.

FINAL RATING: 6/10

SUMMARY:

Although Mach-Hommy has really good lyricism and smart production choices, Pray for Haiti is a lazy album with a good amount of half-assed tracks, accompanied by boring flows and underwhelming guest appearances. It is clear that Mach has potential to be a big underground rap star one day, but from just listening to this album, it wouldn't seem like it.
