On June 25, Florida rapper Ski Mask the Slump God dropped off his long-awaited fourth mixtape, Sin City. It is his first project in more than two years, and many have been waiting for new material from Ski for a long time. However, will this project live up to expectations, or is it an utter disappointment? Let's find out.
1. Intro
I personally would've liked to hear more rapping from Ski on this track, but the instrumental is nice, too. I like the way it changes, and Ski actually didn't do a bad job on here. I've seen people bashing this project all over social media, but that may not be the case for me. I give this track a 7/10.
2. Dr. Suess
The whispering voice isn't working for me at all, and Ski's entire tone on this track just throws me off. The beat is okay, but Ski's voice sounds extremely awkward. I feel like he wasted a good instrumental like this, which is disappointing. I want to see something reminiscent of his SoundCloud days on here. I give this track a 6/10.
3. ADMIT IT
This is currently the biggest song on the mixtape, and I can see why. It's got that classic Ski sound to it, and the beat is tailored to him. However, I still don't like it that much. Too much of that Ski sound is not good, and it's starting to get old. That was one of the main reasons why "Burn the Hoods" was such an underwhelming comeback single. Anyways, I give this track a 6.5/10.
4. The Matrix
Ski has a dope flow on this track, but the hook makes it hard for me to like. His ad-libs are not good anymore, and they sound corny. I think he should stop trying to push the nostalgia button with that "Water" and "Yuh" stuff. It's just not cool anymore. Still, I'll give this track a 7/10.
5. Ya!
The singing could've tailored well to another beat, but Ski delivers a pretty dope hook. I know he can sing (listen to "Unseen" with HenryDaher), but this is still surprising for an artist like him. However, when he switches up his flow from soft to hard during his verse, it throws the whole thing off course. I don't know who's he surrounded by, but they need to start telling him not to do some of the stuff he's doing. This track gets a 7/10.
6. Merlin's Staff
Fantastic, another weak track on the tape. Ski actually does a decent job on the hook and his two verses, but it's just not the music from him that I wanna hear. Plus, every song on this project is sounding the same so far (is this man pulling a Polo G?) Anyways, this track gets a 6/10.
7. Lost In Time
Okay, I know I said earlier that Ski can bring out some smooth vocals. But this track is not it, my guy. He sounds off, and more off than he should on a track where he sings. This is disappointing, because I thought this could be a turn-around point in the project. I guess not. I give this track a 6/10.
8. Fire Hazard
Not a bad track, but not a very good one, either. Ski's flow is nice, but his ad-libs and his mood as a whole are trash. There's no real substance behind the track, either. I really have nothing else to say, so I'm just gonna give this track a 6/10.
9. Mental Magneto
Well, this is actually a strong closer to the mixtape. Although Ski's chopped-up flow in between the instrumental is not great, his final bars are something to write home about. He goes out on one last burst of energy, I guess to prove that this project isn't an absolute disappointment. I give this track a 7/10.
FINAL RATING: 6.5/10
BEST TRACK: Intro
WORST TRACK: Dr. Suess
SUMMARY:
You know those direct-to-DVD animated sequels that Disney kept on pumping out in the '90s and the early 2000s? That sums up my experience of Sin City. A grab at nostalgia. Although it shines out in some parts, it stays the same for the most part, and it doesn't offer anything new that we haven't seen from Ski before. Some features would've been nice, but a man can only hope for so much. Maybe I'll enjoy Ski's album more when it comes out, but I doubt it.
