Revisiting: "Droptopwop" by Gucci Mane

In May 2017, trap legend Gucci Mane dropped the mixtape Droptopwop, his fourth project since leaving prison. The entire tape is produced by Metro Boomin (with additional production from Southside, DJ Spinz, and more), making it an unofficial collaborative mixtape with Metro. The project was extremely well-received by fans and critics alike, and many consider it to be one of his best post-prison releases. But how well does it hold up today? That is what I am finding out.

1. 5 Million Intro

Wow, this is a dope intro. Gucci delivers a super catchy hook and two fire verses over an amazing beat from Metro Boomin and Southside. I guess this intro is setting the stage for what the mixtape will be like, and after hearing it, I expect this tape to be one of Guwop's best. I give this track a 7.5/10.

2. Tho Freestyle

This is a pretty good freestyle from Gucci. Metro delivers another fire beat with some assistance from CuBeatz, and Wop doesn't disappoint, firing hard-hitting lines left and right. His bars reference his weight loss, claims of him being a clone, and more. I really like the whole sound of this track, so I'm giving it a 7.5/10.

3. Hurt a N**** Feelings

We have yet another fire track on this mixtape. This time Metro is the only one producing the beat, so he has the stage to himself. His production works well with Gucci's smooth delivery. The hook is very catchy, and Wop's two verses are both dope. I give this track an 8/10, giving the mixtape a good three-track opening.

4. Helpless

Pretty solid track from Gucci, with the hook being catchy and the energy of the previous tracks being matched. Metro also delivers another dope instrumental, and it's as good as the other beats on this mixtape so far. I'm really enjoying the consistency of this project, which I hope continues in its second half. I give this track a 7.5/10.

5. Met Gala (ft. Offset)

I like Gucci's verse on this track, but Offset is the clear show-stealer. He delivers perhaps one of his best verses of all time, and his hook is pretty good. The Metro and Southside production is also hard-hitting, proving that the two of them work well as a producer duo. This was the most popular song on the mixtape for a reason. I give this track a strong 8.5/10.

6. Finesse the Plug Interlude

I don't get how this is an interlude at all. It's the longest track on the album. Plus, the hook is pretty repetitive. Still, I can get through it, and Gucci's two verses are pretty dope. Metro and CuBeatz team up again for some fire production, and I would love to see more beats from the two of them together in the future. I give this track a 7/10.

7. Dance with the Devil

This track is HARD. From the demonic beat, courtesy of Metro and CuBeatz, to Gucci's devilish hook to his two menacing verses, this track definitely belongs in a horror movie. I'm thinking The Conjuring. I can see why a lot of people streamed this song, because's it's one of the best tracks on the tape so far. I give this track a high 8/10.

8. Both Eyes Closed (ft. 2 Chainz and Young Dolph)

I did not expect Gucci to have such a laid-back flow on this track. He sort of sings on the hook, which works in his favor, and 2 Chainz comes with an extremely dope verse. Dolph also delivers on his end, with multiple hard-hitting bars. He's probably the most underrated person on this track. The production from Metro and London on da Track is villainous, too. I give this track an 8/10.

9. Bucket List

Gucci's entire flow on this track is immaculate. From the second he starts rapping to the end of the final hook, he rhymes perfectly over production from Metro and the legendary DJ Spinz. Both of them work well producing together, so I want to see them produce more stuff in the future as a duo. Other than that, I really enjoy this track. I give it a high 8.5/10.

10. Loss 4 Wrdz (ft. Rick Ross)

A solid closer for a solid mixtape, this track is what Gucci is best at. His hook is great, and he kills his verse. Although Rick Ross doesn't match Wop's energy that well, I still appreciated his part on the track. The instrumental from Metro is also very strong, and it is one of my favorites on the tape overall. I give this track an 8/10.

FINAL RATING: 7.8/10

BEST TRACK: Bucket List

WORST TRACK: Finesse the Plug Interlude

SUMMARY:

Potentially one of his best mixtapes, Droptopwop is a solid collaboration between trap god Gucci Mane and legendary producer Metro Boomin. The tape has no misses, with every track being a banger. Wop has the stage to himself a lot and utilizes it very well, but the tape's guest appearances help out a lot, too. Offset's verse on "Met Gala" is one for the books, 2 Chainz and Young Dolph spit heat on "Both Eyes Closed," and Rick Ross delivers a pretty decent verse on "Loss 4 Wrdz," although it is weaker than usual. Droptopwop is one of Gucci's best post-prison releases.
