Revisiting: "Young Thugga Mane La Flare" by Gucci Mane and Young Thug

In April 2014, trap legend Gucci Mane and rising Atlanta rapper Young Thug released their debut collaborative mixtape, Young Thugga Mane La Flare. At the time, Thugger was signed to Wop's record label, 1017 Bricksquad. Although it generated buzz at the time of its release, this mixtape was poorly received and has been forgotten, as both artists have released more prolific projects. But how well does the tape REALLY hold up today? That is what I am finding out.

1. Hot Boyz (Intro)

I actually really enjoy this track. The bass and thump on this beat is dope, and both Gucci and Thugger deliver hard-hitting verses, and it seems like they have good chemistry together (already proved by "Off The Leash" off of Trap House III). It's not the best the duo could've done, but it's good enough. I give this track a 7/10.

2. Bricks

The beat on here is really good, and I enjoyed Thugger's hook and first verse, but his second verse felt unnecessary. The song was also much too long in general. However, Gucci did come with a fire verse, although he didn't appear on the track that much at all. I wish Thugger didn't do the high voice thing, because it ruined this track for me. I give it a 6/10.

3. Need

Sonny Digital does a good job with this track's production, and Gucci delivers a fire hook and a decent verse, but the mixing on this track is awful. Gucci and Thugger are too quiet, and whoever was the engineer for this song needs to be fired. Also, I really felt like Thugger's verse was pretty bad. It seems like he was still finding his sound back in 2014, and this track proves that. I give this track a 5.5/10.

4. Ride Around The City

This is a pretty awful track for a lot of reasons: one, Thugger's hook and verse are pretty absurd and outright bad. Two, Gucci's verse is underwhelming and it doesn't sound as good as his other stuff. Third and last, the annoying sounds in the background don't help at all. I can't comprehend how Thugger could do this bad, but it is possible. I give this track a 4.5/10.

5. Stoner 2 Times

I actually don't think this is a bad track. Thugger's hook was catchy, and both Gucci and Thugger had pretty decent verses. Still, it's not the best track from the two of them, but I'll take it any day over some of the other tracks on this mixtape. I give this track a solid 7/10, which means maybe this tape is going in a better direction.

6. Omg Bro

Well, this is a nice little surprise. Another strong track. Gucci does good on his verse, but Thugger absolutely washes him on this song. His hook is great, and his verse is even better. I don't know how the student is passing the mentor on this mixtape, but I like it. Still, they both did good. I give this track a 7.5/10.

7. Yay (ft. Takeoff)

I felt that Thugger really underperformed on this song. Takeoff delivered a good but disappointing verse, and Gucci was just standard Gucci, spitting heat like usual. The production from Chriz Beatz was also nice, and it saved this track from becoming too boring. I give this song a 6.5/10.

8. Don't Look At Me

Gucci's two verses are a nice addition to the track, and Thugger's hook is decent enough. TM88 and Metro Boomin on the production is a nice little team-up, too. I think they work well as a production duo. I really don't have that much to say about this track. I give it a 7/10.

9. Out My Biz

I think this song is dope, even though it's nothing special. Thugger has the track all to himself this time, and he shines. The hook is pretty catchy, and his two verses are good enough. I wish Gucci had an appearance, but I guess he's letting his artist shine. I give this track a 7/10.

10. Took By a B***h (ft. Peewee Longway)

I fairly enjoyed Gucci and Longway's verses, but Thugger's hook was bad. I mean, REALLY bad. The high vocals aren't working for me at all, and it just sounds weird. I wish Thugger was left OFF the track, because Wop and Longway have good chemistry as a duo. However, it is what it is, so I give this track a 5.5/10.

11. Siblings

Well, maybe Thugger having space to himself is a good thing. Although this isn't as good as "Out My Biz," it's still pretty decent. The production from M-80 is enjoyable, and Thugger flows well over the beat. I wish it were different from the rest of the tracks on here, but I'll take it. I give this track a 6.5/10.

12. Omg

This is possibly one of the worst Thugger tracks I have ever heard, and probably the worst track on this mixtape. The production from C4Bombs is bland and uninspired, and Thugger's hook is too awkward for me. His vocals are awful, and his verses aren't much better, either. It was a pain to get through this track, even though it was only two minutes long. I give it a low 3/10. Not even Gucci could have saved this track.

13. Lef Some

It's not very good, but I fairly enjoyed this track. Gucci's hook and verse is dope, and I guess Thugger did okay. I feel like they could've done more, though, and that they missed their chance to make a memorable outro to a not-so-memorable mixtape. Still, I'll give this track a 6.5/10.

FINAL RATING: 6.1/10

BEST TRACK: Omg Bro

WORST TRACK: Omg

SUMMARY:

Young Thugga Mane La Flare just feels like one big missed opportunity. Gucci could've really introduced his artist to the world, but Thugger really underperformed on this tape. He's definitely a good rapper, but he disappointed with his big chance to shine and show off his ability to the world. Luckily, he recovered quickly, but both him and Gucci didn't work at the best of their abilities, which has left a sour taste in my mouth for sure.
