Review: "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm"

Updated: Jan 10, 2021

I've held an interest in this movie for a good while, and today I finally got around to watching it. And, boy, what a great movie! This is literally Spider-Verse level!

I really like how solid and well-crafted the animation is. And when you take into factor that the film was meant to go direct-to-video and has a budget of merely $6 million, it's all the more impressive. The way the characters are drawn also keeps true to the animated series.

The story is a surprisingly thought-provoking one, considering many animated films have the visuals but lack a compelling script. A plot twist is always enjoyable in a film, and we get some very well-done flashbacks to Bruce Wayne/Batman's past life with his past love. I also like the score, which fits in well with the movie itself, and the voice cast is full of good picks for the characters, especially the choice of Mark Hamill for the Joker and Kevin Conroy for Batman.

All in all, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm features visually pleasing animation and a compelling story, something many animated flicks lack.

RATING: 9/10
