Review: Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)

I saw this movie in a theater. It was the first time I had been to a movie theater in over a year, and I came in with good expectations. And, to say the least, those expectations were fulfilled.

It's good that cultural representation is added into this film, but there is also a compelling story that can relate to so many people. A nation, divided into five regions thanks to a horrible event that turned people into stone. Our hero, Raya, is likable but also flawed, as she lets rage blind her at times. And that's what makes her such a relatable character. The other characters are also decently written.

However, the main standout is Awkwafina as Sisu, the last dragon not turned into stone in a world that was once filled with dragons. Her rapid-fire delivery mixed with zany humor makes the film pretty funny whilst also still being emotional. I will admit I was on the verge of tears multiple times throughout the movie, which is a good sign considering I rarely cry during movies.

Although the film's budget is only around $100 million, which is pretty low for Disney and more like Illumination's cheap but invigorating style of animation, the visuals in this film are absolutely stunning and help fully immerse the audience into the story. The colors are gorgeous and the battle scenes are pretty dope. Although it's cheaper, it's better than some of the bigger-budgeted stuff Disney has put out in recent years.

Disney delivers another animated spectacle with Raya and the Last Dragon, upping the humor, emotion, and diversity in another visually striking film with bombastic voice work.

RATING: 8.5/10
